Let’s talk about building a team

*Agent Recruiter scope: The no-examination and no-sales description applies when you only introduce candidates and do not perform agent activities. You may not explain, recommend or solicit participation in a plan until formally appointed and registered as an agent. Recruit eligibility, rates, payment timing and use of the term “commission” are subject to the ALC’s current written terms.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Thinking of starting? Here’s what you’ll need.

These are the basics for new Family Takaful agents. We’ll check your eligibility and the latest requirements together before you start.

01

At least 18 years old

An appointed agent must meet the required minimum age.

02

Pass the Takaful Basic Examination (TBE)

TBE is the relevant entry qualification for prospective takaful agents.

03

Meet fit and proper criteria

The operator assesses integrity, reputation, competency, capability and financial integrity.

04

Be formally appointed and registered

Appointment by an operator and MTA registration are required before soliciting business.

05

Complete the additional qualification

A new Family Takaful agent must obtain the relevant Module 2 qualification, or a recognised equivalent, within the applicable period.

06

Commit to continuous training

New and existing agents must complete training or CPD hours within the applicable period.

Official references: Bank Negara Malaysia — Professionalism of Insurance and Takaful Agents and Malaysian Takaful Association — Takaful Basic Examination. Confirm the latest requirements during the introduction session.

THE ROLE

What does an agent do day to day?

A lot of the work is listening, explaining and helping clients with the paperwork. Here are three essentials.

01

Listen first

Ask about their family, commitments and what’s on their mind.

02

Make it easy to understand

Explain what’s covered, what isn’t and how much it costs.

03

Stay around after the sale

Keep in touch for questions, certificate matters and changing needs.

6-YEAR COMMISSION ESTIMATE

What could consistent sales look like over time?

Try your own targets. Explore estimated commission from month one to year six, including clients who keep contributing.

Example: 2 cases a week × 4 weeks = 8 cases a month. This estimate assumes the same monthly sales for 72 months.

How do we work this out?

Rates by certificate year: 40% → 30% → 20% → 15% → 10% → 10%. Confirmed by the site owner on 29 September 2026 for this example. Product eligibility depends on the operator’s schedule.

We assume all cases are approved, monthly contributions are paid in full and every certificate stays active. Commission starts in the sale month with no payment delays. Rates change every 12 months of each certificate’s age.

Bonuses, overrides, operating costs, tax and clawbacks are excluded. These are gross commission estimates, not take-home income or guaranteed payments.

The charts update with your inputs above. Growth assumes steady new sales and every client continuing to pay. Actual commission can fall if sales or payments decrease.

Why does this differ from the annual illustration?

The annual illustration multiplies annual new-business ACE by the commission rates. It gives RM 73,728 in year one and RM 1,004,544 over six years. It counts a full year of commission for each year’s sales group without adjusting for the month each sale starts.

This calculator accounts for clients joining gradually. A December client contributes only one month of commission in that first calendar year. The monthly calculation therefore gives RM 39,936 in year one and RM 898,944 within 72 months. Some commission from later sales falls after month 72 and is not included.

*Here, ACE means monthly contribution per case × 12 × new cases per year, as in the example. It is not commission or cash received that year. Check the commission basis, rates, client retention conditions and payment timing with the operator. The calculator does not save your inputs.

QUESTIONS BEFORE STARTING

A few things you might be wondering.

Can I start without experience?+

You can explore the role first. Experience helps, but you’ll still need the required training, qualifications and appointment.

Can I do this part-time?+

Let’s look at your schedule and the agency’s arrangements. You’ll still need time for training and looking after clients.

Is income guaranteed?+

No. It depends on eligible sales, commission rates and clients continuing to pay. Work expenses and payment conditions matter too.

Are there events, trips or rewards?+

Ask about current team events, recognition and reward programmes. Participation or trips are not automatic; check each programme’s targets, eligibility, costs and written terms first.

What costs are involved?+

Ask for a written breakdown of exams, registration, training, travel and marketing costs before deciding.
